Snail & Slug Control in Cape Town

Snails and slugs can strip a bed of seedlings in a single damp night, and the standard blue pellets sold to stop them are dangerous to dogs and wildlife. We use pet-safer controls and manage the conditions they thrive in, so your garden recovers without putting animals at risk.

How do you get rid of snails and slugs in the garden?

Effective snail and slug control combines targeted treatment with habitat management. An inspection identifies the damp, sheltered harbourage they hide in by day and the plants they are targeting. A pet-safer molluscicide, such as an iron-phosphate-based product, is applied where appropriate, alongside reducing damp harbourage, managing watering and using barriers around vulnerable beds. Standard metaldehyde pellets work but are toxic to pets and wildlife, which is why habitat control and safer products matter.

STEP ONE: IDENTIFICATION

Signs of a snail and slug problem

Snails and slugs feed at night and in damp weather, then hide by day under pots, mulch, timber and dense planting. The damage is usually noticed before the culprits are seen.

Slime trails plus ragged holes in leaves, appearing overnight, point to an active population rather than the odd passing snail.

SITE INSPECTION CHECKLIST
SNAIL & SLUG ACTIVITY
Slime trails

Silvery dried mucus trails across paving, walls, pots and soil, most obvious in the morning.

Holes in leaves

Irregular ragged holes chewed in leaves, with soft new growth and seedlings hit hardest.

Overnight damage

Plants that look fine at dusk and are stripped by morning, the classic sign of night feeding.

Damaged seedlings

Young plants and vegetable seedlings cut down or grazed to the stem soon after planting out.

Snails in shelter

Clusters of snails under pots, in dense foliage, behind timber and in damp, shaded corners by day.

Damp harbourage

Activity concentrated in shaded, moist, cluttered areas that stay wet after watering or rain.

BEFORE YOU TRY IT YOURSELF

Why DIY snail and slug control can backfire

Home remedies help a little; the common pellets carry a real risk to pets. Here is the balance.

Beer traps and salt do little

Beer traps catch a handful and salt is a temporary, plant-damaging fix. Neither addresses the sheltered population that reappears each damp night.

Standard pellets endanger pets

Metaldehyde pellets are effective but toxic to dogs, cats and wildlife if eaten. In a garden with pets, that is a serious risk not worth taking.

The harbourage stays

Without reducing the damp shelter and managing watering, snails and slugs keep breeding and re-invading from the surrounding garden.

We assess the extent and the risk factors — pets, edible crops and vulnerable beds — that shape the safest approach.

03

Treat

A pet-safer molluscicide applied where appropriate, focused on protecting vulnerable beds and hotspots.

04

Manage habitat

We advise on reducing damp shelter, watering in the morning rather than evening, and using barriers around key plants.

05

Follow up

Guidance to keep numbers down through the wet season, with optional return visits for ongoing protection.

WHY IT IS WORTH ACTING NOW

Why snails and slugs are worth managing

Snails and slugs are mainly a garden and crop problem, but the damage adds up fast and one common control method brings a real safety risk.

The costs worth knowing are garden and crop damage, the danger of standard pellets, and a lesser-known health point.

Garden and crop damage

A population can strip seedlings, vegetables and prized ornamentals overnight, undoing weeks of planting.

Risk to pets from pellets

The metaldehyde pellets many people reach for are toxic to dogs and cats — a common cause of pet poisoning.

Wildlife impact

Broad-spectrum pellets also harm birds and beneficial garden wildlife, upsetting the balance that keeps other pests down.

Parasite risk

Snails and slugs can carry parasites such as rat lungworm, a reason to keep them off edible crops and away from pets.

STRAIGHT ANSWER

What does snail and slug control cost in Cape Town?

We quote per garden, because a small courtyard and a large planted estate need different coverage. Four things move the number:

The inspection and quote are free and carry no obligation. You will have the figure in writing before any treatment begins.

They are affordable and reliable. We started using them last year and being a backpacker's manager with such busy seasons we didn't have many complaints about having roaches in the rooms like before.

QUESTIONS WE GET EVERY WEEK

FAQs

We prioritise pet-safer controls such as iron-phosphate-based products and habitat management, rather than the metaldehyde pellets that are toxic to dogs and cats. Tell us about your animals and we plan accordingly.

Snails and slugs are most active in damp conditions, so numbers and feeding surge after rain and heavy watering. Cape Town’s wet winters are peak season for them.

A mix of pet-safer treatment, morning rather than evening watering, clearing damp harbourage and using barriers around beds. We focus protection on seedlings and crops, which are hit hardest.

Only marginally. They catch a few and may slow others, but they do not address the sheltered breeding population. They are a supplement, not a solution.

They can carry parasites such as rat lungworm, so it is wise to keep pets from eating them and to keep the pests off edible crops. Managing the population reduces that risk.

Reduce damp shelter — clear debris, lift pots, thin dense planting — water in the morning so soil dries by night, and use barriers around vulnerable beds. We advise on all of this.

Through the wet season, periodic protection keeps numbers down, especially in larger or heavily planted gardens. In drier months the pressure eases and less is needed.

It depends on the size of the garden, the severity and whether pets and crops call for a particular approach. We inspect and quote free of charge, in writing, before any work starts.
