Mouse Control in Cape Town

One mouse is rarely one mouse. They breed every few weeks and squeeze through a gap the width of a pencil. We find how they are getting in, clear the infestation and seal the property so the next generation does not follow.

How do you get rid of mice in a Cape Town property?

Mouse control works in three stages. First, an inspection to find the runs, nesting sites and entry points. Second, trapping and targeted baiting placed exactly where the droppings and grease marks show activity. Third, proofing — sealing every gap of 6 mm or wider, because that is all a mouse needs to get back in. Traps alone thin the numbers for a week or two; the property re-infests as soon as the next mice find the same open gap.

STEP ONE: IDENTIFICATION

Signs you have mice

Mice are not small rats. They are inquisitive rather than cautious, which is why trapping works quickly once stations are placed correctly — but they are also far more numerous and harder to exclude, because a 6 mm gap is enough.

The panel is the checklist our technicians run on site. Two or more ticks means an active population, not a stray that wandered in from the garden.

SITE INSPECTION CHECKLIST
RODENT ACTIVITY
Small droppings

Dark, rice-grain shaped, 3–6 mm, scattered along skirtings, in drawers and under sinks.

A musky ammonia smell

A distinctive stale odour in cupboards, pantries and confined roof or wall spaces.

Gnaw marks and shredding

Chewed food packaging, and shredded paper, insulation or fabric used for nesting.

Night-time scratching

Light, quick scurrying inside walls, kickboards or the ceiling after dark.

Grease smears

Faint dark marks along walls and pipe runs where mice travel the same route nightly.

Nests in hidden voids

Balls of shredded material behind appliances, in storeroom clutter or roof insulation.

BEFORE YOU TRY IT YOURSELF

Why shop-bought mouse control usually fails

Most people call us after a few weeks of traps and poison. Here is what goes wrong.

Traps in the wrong spot

A trap placed by guesswork gets walked past. Mice run tight to walls and edges, so placement has to follow the grease marks and droppings — not the middle of the floor.

Poison with no clean-up plan

Loose bait behind an appliance can leave a mouse dying in a wall cavity, with the smell that follows. We use sealed stations and remove carcasses on the follow-up.

No proofing afterwards

This is the one that matters. Clear the mice but leave the gaps and they are back within weeks. A mouse needs 6 mm — a worn door sweep or a pipe penetration is plenty.

OUR METHOD

How our mouse control service works

Every job runs the same five stages, from a garden flat in Rondebosch to a food store in Montague Gardens.

You get a written report after each visit showing what was found and where.

01

Inspect

We check the kitchen, storerooms, roof void, subfloor and perimeter, and map runs, nesting sites and entry points.

02

Identify

House mouse or a young rat — the treatment and proofing spec differ, so we confirm before placing anything.

03

Treat

Snap traps and sealed bait stations set on confirmed runs, numbered and recorded. Eco-friendly products at label rate.

04

Proof

We close every 6 mm gap — door sweeps, air bricks, pipe penetrations, damaged vents — and flag the food source drawing them in.

05

Follow up

A return visit to check take, remove carcasses and confirm activity has stopped. Ongoing monitoring available.

WHY IT IS WORTH ACTING NOW

What a mouse problem actually costs you

A single pair of mice can become dozens within a season. What looks like one mouse in the pantry in autumn is an established population by mid-winter.

The two costs people underestimate are contamination and fire risk.

Food contamination

Mice foul far more food than they eat, spreading salmonella and other bacteria through droppings and urine across surfaces and stored goods.

Fire risk

Mice gnaw constantly, including on cable insulation — a recognised cause of electrical faults and a common insurance dispute.

Business exposure

For a deli, café or food store, one sighting can mean discarded stock, a failed inspection and a review that lingers online.

Fast escalation

Breeding every three to four weeks means a small problem becomes a large one quickly — delay makes the treatment bigger and costlier.

STRAIGHT ANSWER

What does mouse control cost in Cape Town?

We quote per property, because a one-bedroom flat and a double-storey with a large roof void are not the same job. Four things move the number:

The inspection and the quote are free, and there is no obligation. You will get the figure in writing before any work starts.

They are affordable and reliable. We started using them last year and being a backpacker's manager with such busy seasons we didn't have many complaints about having roaches in the rooms like before.

QUESTIONS WE GET EVERY WEEK

FAQs

Because mice are curious rather than wary, trapping often starts working within a day or two, and most domestic infestations are under control in one to two weeks. A large or well-established population, or one that needs proofing, can take a little longer.

Yes. Bait goes into sealed, tamper-resistant stations that pets and children cannot open, and everything is applied strictly to label. Where there are pets or a risk to wildlife, we lean on trapping instead. Tell us about your animals at the inspection.

A: Size and behaviour. Mouse droppings are 3–6 mm and rice-shaped; rat droppings are 12–18 mm. Mice are inquisitive and need only a 6 mm gap; rats are cautious and need about 20 mm. We confirm the species before we treat, because the plan differs.

We proof. Trapping without closing the gaps is why homes re-infest. During the inspection we find every entry point and quote the sealing and mesh work alongside the treatment.

Cleanliness helps but is not the whole story. Mice follow warmth and shelter as much as food, so building work next door, a neighbour’s garden, or cooler weather pushing them indoors all play a part. Cape Town homes often see activity rise as winter sets in.

It is a risk with any rodent treatment. We reduce it by trapping and baiting close to the harbourage so mice are caught near the station, and we remove carcasses on the follow-up. If an odour develops, call us and we will locate it.

Yes. Commercial rodent programmes include a numbered station plan, a service file kept on site and a report after every visit — the documentation your health inspector and food-safety auditor will ask for.

It depends on the size of the property, how established the infestation is and whether proofing is needed. We inspect and quote free of charge, in writing, before any work starts.
