Bird Lice & Mite Control in Cape Town
Bird lice and mites become a human problem the moment a bird nest is abandoned. With no host, the mites move indoors in their thousands looking for a blood meal, and start biting people. We remove the source nest, treat the affected areas and proof against the birds that started it.

How do you get rid of bird mites and lice in a house?
Getting rid of bird mites means dealing with the source, not just the bites. The infestation almost always traces back to a bird nest in a roof, eave, vent or under solar panels; once the birds leave, the mites migrate indoors to find a host. Treatment removes the nest and nesting material, applies a targeted acaricide to the affected areas and entry routes, and proofs against the birds so it cannot recur. Treating the bites or spraying rooms without removing the nest leaves the source producing more mites.
Signs of bird lice or mites
The key clue is the link to birds. Bird mites are tiny — barely visible — and appear suddenly, often after birds that were nesting nearby leave or are removed. The bites and itching begin as the mites spread indoors in search of a host.
If biting and itching coincide with a known or suspected bird nest in the roof or eaves, mites are the likely cause. We confirm the source on site.
Unexplained itching and small bites on people, appearing suddenly and often worst near affected rooms.
Minute pale or dark specks on skin, walls, ceilings and bedding, moving on close inspection.
Symptoms starting soon after birds nesting in the roof, eaves or vents leave or are removed.
Concentrations around light fittings, ceilings, vents and walls adjoining a nest site.
Bird nests and debris in the roof void, eaves, gutters or under solar panels.
Pigeons, sparrows or starlings roosting and nesting on or in the roof above affected rooms.
BEFORE YOU TRY IT YOURSELF
Why DIY bird mite treatment usually fails
Treating the bites or fogging a room ignores the nest that is producing the mites. Here is why.
The nest keeps producing mites
As long as the source nest and nesting material remain, they keep releasing mites into the home. Removing the nest is the essential step DIY skips.
Sprays miss the entry routes
Mites travel from the roof and eaves along set routes to reach people. Spraying open room surfaces misses those pathways and the harbourage.
No bird proofing
Leave the roof and eaves open and birds simply re-nest, and the whole cycle starts again. Proofing is what makes the fix permanent.
How our bird mite and lice service works
We treat the source, the spread and the cause — the birds.
You get a written report, and proofing advice to stop it recurring.
Inspect
We trace the mites back to the source nest — roof, eaves, vents or solar panels — and map how they are reaching living areas.
Remove the source
The bird nest and nesting material are removed and cleared, cutting off the supply of mites at source.
Treat
A targeted acaricide applied to the affected areas, entry routes and harbourage to clear the mites that have spread indoors.
Proof against birds
We seal and proof the roost and nest points so birds cannot return — the step that prevents recurrence.
Follow up
A check to confirm the biting has stopped, with guidance on keeping birds off the building.

Why bird mites need prompt action
Bird mites cannot complete their life cycle on humans, but that does not stop them biting — and while the source nest remains, the problem persists and spreads.
The costs worth knowing are the biting and distress, the spread through the home, and the bird problem behind it.
Bites and skin irritation
Bird mites bite people, causing itching, irritation and, for some, an allergic skin reaction.
Distress and lost sleep
An unexplained biting problem indoors causes real anxiety and disrupts sleep until the source is found and removed.
Spread through the home
From the source nest, mites move through ceilings, walls and rooms in large numbers, widening the affected area.
An underlying bird problem
Bird mites are a symptom of birds nesting on the building — which brings droppings, disease and damage of its own.
What does bird mite and lice control cost in Cape Town?
We quote per property, because a single nest in an eave and multiple roost sites across a roof differ. Four things move the number:
- Source and access — how many nest sites are involved and how easy they are to reach for removal.
- Extent of spread — how far the mites have spread through the home and how many areas need treating.
- Proofing required — the bird proofing needed to stop re-nesting, quoted alongside the treatment.
- Property type —a home differs from a commercial building with larger roof voids and multiple roosts.
The inspection and the quote are free. You will receive a comprehensive, transparent written proposal detailing exactly what steps are required to achieve complete eradication.

They are affordable and reliable. We started using them last year and being a backpacker's manager with such busy seasons we didn't have many complaints about having roaches in the rooms like before.

FAQs
Where do bird mites come from?
Almost always from a bird nest on the building — in the roof, eaves, vents or under solar panels. When the birds leave, the mites migrate indoors looking for a new host, which is when people start getting bitten.
Can bird mites live on humans?
No. They cannot complete their life cycle on people, so they do not infest humans the way some other parasites do. But they will bite people while searching for a bird host, which is the problem.
Why do the bites keep happening after I spray?
Because the source nest is still producing mites. Until the nest is removed and the birds are proofed out, spraying rooms only treats the symptom, not the cause.
Do you remove the bird nest as part of the service?
Yes. Removing the source nest and nesting material is central to the treatment — it is what stops new mites being produced. We then treat the affected areas and proof against the birds.
Are the treatments safe for my family?
Yes, applied by a professional to label. We target the harbourage, entry routes and affected areas, and advise on any short precautions for treated rooms.
How do I stop it happening again?
Bird proofing. Sealing the roof, eaves and vents so birds cannot re-nest is what makes the fix permanent — we quote this alongside the mite treatment.
Is this related to your bird proofing services?
Yes. Bird mites are a direct consequence of birds nesting on a building, so our proofing work — spikes, netting, wire and solar-panel proofing — is the long-term prevention for it.
How much does bird mite control cost?
It depends on the number of nest sites, how far the mites have spread and the proofing required. We inspect and quote free of charge, in writing, before any work starts.
